Why a Professional Headshot Still Matters and Why It's Not Just a Photo, It's Your First Impression

Let’s be honest. We all know what it’s like to scroll past a profile picture that just doesn’t land. Maybe it’s a selfie with strange lighting, an outdated photo from a decade ago, or a blurry crop from your cousin’s wedding. It happens, but it doesn’t have to.

In a world that’s more connected (and competitive) than ever, your headshot isn’t just nice to have, it’s your digital handshake. It’s what people see before they meet you, read your résumé, or hear you speak in a Zoom meeting.

Why a Professional Headshot Matters

We’re all judged (at least a little) by our profile pictures. And while selfies and candid snapshots have their place, your professional presence deserves more.

A high-quality headshot shows people you care about the details. It communicates credibility, approachability, and trustworthiness before you even say a word.

And when done right, it doesn’t just look like you, it feels like you.

What Makes a Great Headshot?

At Courtney Mitchell Photography in Sherman, Texas, we create portraits that bring out your personality while keeping things polished and professional. Whether you’re going for confident and classic or creative and bold, we’ll guide you through every step so your headshot feels like the best version of you.

More Than a Profile Picture

Your headshot isn’t just for digital use. Many of our clients choose to print their favorite images, whether it’s for press kits, framed display, or as part of a personal branding suite. We offer beautifully printed options to make sure your portrait stands the test of time.

Time for an Update?

If it’s been more than a couple of years, or if your current photo just doesn’t feel like you anymore, it’s probably time. We make the process easy, comfortable, and even (dare we say?) fun.

5 Tips to Help You Feel Confident & Prepared

If you’ve booked a headshot session (or you’re thinking about it), here are five simple ways to set yourself up for success:

1. Plan Your Outfit Thoughtfully

Choose something that makes you feel confident. Stick to solid colors, classic silhouettes, and don't be afraid to be bold. Layers and texture photograph beautifully. Need ideas? I’ve curated a What to Wear Pinterest board just for you.

2. Grooming Makes a Difference

A fresh haircut, trimmed beard, or simple makeup touch-up can go a long way. Ladies, don’t be afraid to elevate your everyday makeup just a bit. Gentlemen, check for shine and flyaways. We want you looking polished, not perfect.

3. Rest and Hydrate

It’s simple, but important. Get a good night’s sleep and drink plenty of water the day before. It helps your skin look fresh, and your energy will show through in your expressions.

4. Trust the Process

Feeling camera shy? You’re not alone. We’ll walk you through everything including posing, expression, angles and lighting so you never feel lost or awkward. Just relax and let us guide you.

5. Think About How You’ll Use the Images

Knowing where your images will live (website, LinkedIn, marketing materials) can help us photograph with purpose. We’ll create a variety of looks and orientations so you have what you need (and then some).
