How to Prepare for Your Personal Branding Portrait Session

Nov 30 2023 | By: Courtney Mitchell Photography

Your professional image says something about you long before you have the opportunity to introduce yourself.

Whether you're a business owner, executive, entrepreneur, or established professional, the photographs you use across your website, social media, and marketing materials help shape that first impression. And while a great portrait should look like you, it should also communicate something about what you do, how you work, and the people you want to reach. That's where a little thoughtful preparation makes all the difference.

Start With Where Your Images Will Be Used

Before thinking about what to wear or where to take your photographs, think about what you actually need them to do. Are you updating your website? Building a stronger LinkedIn presence? Preparing for speaking engagements? Creating marketing materials or content for your business? The answers help determine the types of portraits we'll create.

A photograph intended for a professional biography may need a different composition than one designed for a website banner. Social media content might benefit from a variety of expressions, settings, and compositions. The goal isn't simply to create a collection of beautiful photographs. It's to create images that work for you.

Choose Clothing That Reflects Your Professional Identity

You don't have to wear a suit to look professional, unless a suit makes sense for you and your business. Your wardrobe should reflect how you want to be seen while still feeling authentic to who you are.

Consider your industry, your audience, and the impression you want to make. A business executive, creative entrepreneur, and real estate professional may all approach their wardrobes differently, and that's exactly as it should be.

A few things worth considering:

  • Choose clothing that fits well and makes you feel confident.

  • Bring a variety of looks if your session allows for outfit changes.

  • Consider your brand colors without feeling obligated to wear them.

  • Pay attention to details like shoes, jewelry, and accessories.

  • Avoid anything that requires constant adjusting or feels uncomfortable.

Most importantly, don't feel like you have to figure it all out alone. Wardrobe planning is part of the conversation before your session.

Think Beyond the Traditional Headshot

A polished headshot is valuable, but personal branding photography can tell a much bigger story. Depending on your profession and how you plan to use your images, we might create portraits that show you working, interacting with your environment, or simply presenting a more relaxed side of your personality.

These photographs help your audience see more than a face. They provide context and help people connect with the person behind the business or professional title. And no, that doesn't mean every photograph needs to feature you sitting at a laptop holding a coffee cup. Unless, of course, that's genuinely part of your story.

Consider the Setting

Location plays an important role in how a photograph feels. A clean studio background can create a timeless, polished portrait that works beautifully for professional profiles, publications, and company websites.

An office, workspace, or other meaningful location can add context and personality. Sometimes the strongest collection includes both. We'll consider the overall look of your brand, how your photographs will be used, and which settings make the most sense for your goals.

Bring the Details That Tell Your Story

Sometimes the smallest details make an image feel more personal. Depending on your profession, that might mean bringing tools of your trade, products you've created, or items you use regularly in your work. But props should have a purpose. We don't need to fill every photograph with objects to communicate what you do. Often, the most effective branding portraits are the simplest ones.

You Don't Have to Know How to Pose

This may be the concern I hear most often, and it's one you can leave at the studio door. You don't need to practice expressions in the mirror or arrive knowing exactly what to do with your hands. That's my job. With more than 15 years of experience photographing people, I know how to guide you through posing, expression, and the small adjustments that make a meaningful difference.

We'll create a variety of images while keeping the process comfortable and natural. You can concentrate on being yourself. I'll take care of the photography.

A Little Planning Makes Your Portraits Work Harder

Personal branding photography is an investment in how you present yourself professionally. When we begin with a clear understanding of your goals, we can create a collection of images that feels cohesive, authentic, and useful across multiple platforms.

You shouldn't have to settle for one photograph that you're trying to make work everywhere. You deserve portraits that reflect the professional you've become and support where you're going next.
